On this feast day of Saint Andrew – the traditional patron of Scotland – the Académie Internationale d’Héraldique mourns the passing of Mark Dennis, holder of Seat No. 72, to which he acceded in 2021 (having previously been co-opted as an Associate Member of the Academy ten years earlier).
A native of California who later settled in Scotland, a former advocate and subsequently a tribunal judge for two decades, Mark Dennis devoted his work primarily to Scots heraldry, establishing himself as a gifted, innovative, and prolific heraldic artist.
He served as Chairman of the Heraldry Society of Scotland from 2008 to 2014. In 2009 he was appointed an Officer of Arms as Ormond Pursuivant, and he retired from the Court of the Lord Lyon at the age of seventy in 2020 as Ross Herald Extraordinary.
May the Lord grant eternal rest to his soul!
