Maurizio Carlo Alberto Gorra – „Arte musiva e araldica mondiale in onore del Papa-Re”

Our Italian colleague, Mr. Maurizio Carlo Alberto Gorra, associated member of the Académie Internationale d’Héraldique, and also an expert in iconography and heraldry, has just completed a new research project: Arte musiva e araldica mondiale in onore del Papa-Re. Schede araldiche, storiche e biografiche dei titolari dei 650 stemmi ed emblemi contenuti nella cripta di Pio IX in San Lorenzo fuori le mura (Roma).

The project has been conducted during eight years, on a heraldic ensemble never studied before: 650 heraldic achievements belonging to armigers from all over the world (from China to South America, and from Canada to Australia), made in mosaic in the crypt of the Roman basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura, under the aegis of Popes Leo XIII and Saint Pius X between 1882 and 1911. These achievements designated armigers from all over the world, who participated in the restoration of the tomb of Pope Pius IX.

The majority of the holders are European, and among them there is also an interesting representation from Eastern countries (Poland, the former Austrian Empire, Hungary, Ukraine and the Baltic countries).
