Our colleague, Hans A.K.T. CAPPELEN, AIH, a Norwegian citizen, passed away on January 12 this year, aged almost 80.
Retired partner of the law firm Advokatfirmaet Cappelen & Krefting DA, Oslo, Hans Cappelen has occupied since 1984 the chair number 66 of the Académie Internationale d’Héraldique.
An enthusiast of general, civic and family heraldry research, Hans Cappelen served as President (for thirteen years) of Norsk Heraldisk Forening.
Among others, Hans Cappela published the following studies: “The Concept of the Coat of Arms in Norwegian Legislation” (“Kongressbericht”, Stuttgart 1978), “Règles pour l’utilisation des armoiries communales en Norvège” (“Archivum Heraldicum”, 1-2 1976), Norske kommunevåpen (= Norwegian Municipal Coats of Arms) (Oslo, 1987, together with K. Johannessen), “Norwegian Simplicity. The principles of recent public heraldry in Norway” (“The Coat of Arms”, vol. VII, No. 138, 1988), “The Struggle for a «pure» Norwegian Flag: Nationalism and Symbolism in the 19th Century” (“The Flag Bulletin, XIX, 3-5, 1980), Norske slektsvåpen (= Norwegian Family Coats of Arms) (Oslo, 1969 and 1976), “On taking the family arms of others” (“Genealogica et Heraldica”, 1972).
